The BRC safety committee acts as the main conduit of communication between labor and management. Committee members, elected by their peers, represent various departments. They participate in monthly safety meetings and work on several projects at a time, prioritizing them based on safety needs.
“Sometimes things need to be fixed right away; other times it’s not quite as urgent,” said John Lucio, carman. “The committee will assess the problem and determine the right department to fix it.”
The committee’s current efforts include safety audits and ensuring more than 700 switches are labeled correctly.
“We want to help familiarize new hires with what is going on in the yard,” Lucio said. “We also want to make sure people feel comfortable in coming to the safety committee if they have any concerns.”
